Position Summary: 
 
The Director, Contract Management and Legal Operations, will develop processes and practices to enable more efficient and effective legal support of Crinetics business needs. This role requires an individual who understands and has significant experience in emerging knowledge management tools and processes and has deep expertise in contracting and negotiating in the life science industry. Responsibilities include developing best practices to incorporate legal technology to automate and streamline legal review and providing oversight of the staff and resource allocation for the preparation of contractual documents. This person will also take charge of all change management planning and communication and make purchasing decisions for legal technology software and tools.
 
The Director, Contract Management and Legal Operations, is also accountable for organizing internal stakeholders, subject matter experts, Legal and supporting functions across the organization to provide for long-term sustainable contracting solutions. This person will be responsible to partner with the GC and CFO to drive specific initiatives targeted on continuous improvement of the contracting and negotiating process. The successful candidate will report on key operational and substantive metrics for the Legal group that will better inform decision-making and identify and implement legal department tools to streamline new or existing practices.  This person will develop and enforce processes and policies to manage outside counsel usage and spend and assist with budget matters and optimize workflows within the legal department. 
 
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:  
These may include but are not limited to: 
  • Negotiate complex, high-value contracts in partnership with Research and Business Development, Legal, Finance, and other functional leads to achieve company growth expectations.
  • Mitigate risk through understanding of proposed terms and conditions and develop recommendations for contract language to meet business needs.
  • Identify and communicate risk areas throughout the negotiation contract lifecycle and the renewal process. Escalate issues appropriately.
  • Influence and align complex groups of stakeholders towards overall business objectives.
  • Focus on operational improvement, reducing cycle times and disputes with legal department effort invested only in highest risk/complexity contracts.
  • Drive compliance with Legal, organizational, and departmental policies and procedures with adherence to processes and business rules.
  • Prioritize assignments and execution of various contracts.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to others on the team and cross-functionally.
  • Maintain contracting metrics for vendors and direct reports, ensure that internal systems are updated in a timely, accurate, and complete manner, and maintain an overview of contract statuses and issues, in order to proactively communicate progress, risks, issues or changes that may impact quality, timelines and/or budget.
  • Act as a point of contact for all contract escalations.
  • Build robust operational and quality control reporting and metrics to drive continuous improvement in contract terms.
  • Operationalize tools and processes to enable standardization, risk calibration, and playbooks for extensive contract creation/execution with no legal department involvement.
  • Ensure signature policy and financial approval thresholds are governed through automation with 100 percent compliance.
  • Establish full automation of reminders and workflow of contract term dates, renewals, and milestones.
  • Focus on immediate and short-term (< 2 year) strategic planning horizon.
  • Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.  
 
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • JD degree required with 12 years’ related experience and 8 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
  • Minimum 10+ years of contracting and negotiating experience, with relevant experience in the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology or Life Science industry.
  • Ability to operate effectively in an environment with high levels of ambiguity.
  • Ability to deal with high levels of complexity, focusing on outcomes.
  • Continuous improvement mind-set and disposition is critical.
  • Expertise leading contract negotiations and drafting contracts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contract terms and terminology enabling a comprehensive review and commentary of business contracts.
  • Demonstrates leadership capabilities.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to effectively influence and negotiate as well as build relationships with individuals at all levels including senior management.
  • Strong project management, cross-functional team leadership and organizational skill to enable effectively spearheading ongoing process improvements, identify and implement best practices and drive continuous improvement.
  • Customer oriented with collaborative communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to be clear and persuasive, orally and in writing.
  • Organized and detail orientated with ability to drive continuous improvement.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.  
 
Technical Knowledge Required: 
Software Knowledge:  Windows, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and HighQ/Practical Law and other Thomson Reuters legal business software.  Expertise of contract management and editing systems.
 
Physical Demands and Work Environment: 
Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Some walking and lifting up to 25 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is typically low to moderate. The physical demands described above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions and responsibilities of this job. Laboratory Activities (if applicable): Biology and chemical laboratory environment experience needed. Environmental health and safety requirements also apply. 
 
Travel: 
You may be required to travel for up to 5% of your time. 
 
The Anticipated Base Salary Range:  $220,000-$250,000
In addition to your base pay, our total rewards program consists of a discretionary annual target bonus, stock options, ESPP, and 401k match. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience and education. Crinetics Pharmaceuticals is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
